Newly released graphic video shows the moments that led up to a law-enforcement-involved shooting that killed a man in central Phoenix Friday night.
It happened after Phoenix Police responded to assist the Arizona Department of Public Safety with an incident just after 9 p.m., near 19th Avenue on Durango Street, which is just north of Interstate 17.
While authorities have not released what led up to the shooting, video showed a man with his hands up and troopers and officers ordering him to the ground. However, he got back up and then went into his car.
The video showed the man trying to drive off but failing, possibly because of a grappler, a high-strength net that goes around a car’s rear tire and axle, that was tied to an DPS SUV. The car’s tires kept spinning as the man tried to peel out.
Eventually, law enforcement from both agencies opened fire, according to the Phoenix Police Department. The man, who has not been publicly identified, died on the scene.
Police did not release any other details on this incident, which remains under investigation.
This is the ninth law-enforcement-involved shooting in the valley so far and the 20th overall in Arizona.
