A 25-year-old man died Sunday after drowning beneath a waterfall in the Fossil Creek Wilderness in central Arizona.

Just before noon, deputies were dispatched to a reported drowning at the Fossil Creek Lower Waterfalls, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. They responded alongside Tonto Rim Search and Rescue and Pine-Strawberry Fire Department.

Witnesses told authorities the man jumped from the waterfall into the water below. After resurfacing, he gave a thumbs-up and kept swimming before he went beneath the waterfall and disappeared underwater.

Witnesses said he remained submerged for more than 10 minutes before bystanders pulled him from the water and immediately began CPR, but he did not regain consciousness.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.
