An iconic piece of history that was called a local treasure has been turned to ash in Prescott Valley because of a fire Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out at the historic Barlow-Massicks house, also known as the Castle on the Creek, on Fourth Street near Fain Park around 3:15 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames and smoke coming from the roof. Crews worked as quickly as they could to put out the flames.

A person who was living there escaped safely. Firefighters said one person was taken to the hospital.

But by the time the flames were put out, the historic house was destroyed, leaving the brick frame behind.

“Sending our gratitude to the first responders working the scene and our support to all those impacted by this loss,” Prescott Valley town officials said in a Facebook post.

The house dates back to the late 1800s. Thomas Gibson Barlow Massicks built the “castle” as a British manor for entertaining. It had a ballroom and a wine cellar, which were rare for a house in the Arizona territory
