Carefree Highway is completely reopened after a deadly crash caused a several-mile-long closure.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Arizona Department of Transportation responded to a crash on state Route 74 at milepost 29, about a mile from southbound Interstate 17.
DPS says that a driver was heading westbound on SR 74 when they tried to pass another driver using the eastbound lanes. That’s when the first driver lost control and crashed head-on into the other car. The second car flipped over, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Impairment does not appear to be a factor. It is unclear if the first driver will face any charges related to the crash.
Traffic was blocked for approximately seven miles in both directions, but the eastbound lanes were back open around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The westbound lanes reopened several hours later.
