A 17-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a car outside a high school in the East Valley on Thursday.

According to Chandler police, the crash happened near Arizona Avenue and Detroit Street, next to Chandler High School, just after noontime.

Information about what led up to the crash is limited, but witnesses told police the student was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk.

The high school student was taken to a nearby hospital in extremely critical condition. Authorities confirmed on Saturday morning that the student died. He has not been publicly identified.

The driver remained on scene, and police said the driver was cooperating
